Korean company donates 8,000 ebikes to Kingdom

Report that VERYWORDS signed an MOU with Cambodia's Ministry of Environment and GGGI to donate 8,000 electric motorcycles and install about 200 charging stations nationwide

Korean manufacturer VERYWORDS announced that on February 7 it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Cambodia's Ministry of Environment and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), under which it will donate 8,000 electric motorcycles to the Ministry. The company also plans to build about 200 charging stations across the country to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support Cambodia's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth explained that the vehicles will be distributed free of charge and without conditions to state institutions, students and the private sector. Charging stations will be built nationwide, including in the tourist city of Siem Reap. Based on an average of 40 km traveled per motorcycle per year, the joint press release projected a reduction of about 5,040 tons of greenhouse gases per year and the creation of 150 green jobs, and VERYWORDS will also provide two years of free maintenance. The company previously invested more than $2 million in an electric vehicle factory in Kandal province, creating 60 jobs.

VERYWORDS CEO Kim Sung-Woo said that the Paris Agreement Article 6 carbon finance framework and support from the Korean government made it possible to decide on this investment. He said the purpose of the partnership is to replace smoke-emitting conventional motorcycles with electric scooters and accelerate the growth of the e-mobility industry. Shomi Kim, GGGI Cambodia Country Representative, said she hopes infrastructure development and the adoption of electric vehicles will progress quickly.
